Guide

Backlog Grooming (also known as Backlog Refinement) is the ongoing process of reviewing, prioritizing, and estimating backlog items to ensure the team has a ready-to-work-on backlog.

Why Backlog Grooming Matters

Ready for Sprint Planning: Well-groomed backlog means smoother sprint planning sessions and more accurate commitments.

Better Estimates: Items are properly estimated when the whole team understands them.

Clear Priorities: The team and stakeholders agree on what matters most.

Reduced Waste: Less time spent re-discussing items during sprint planning.

Item Statuses Explained

Unrefined: New items that need discussion, clarification, and estimation.

Refined: Items that have been discussed but not yet fully ready for sprint.

Ready: Fully groomed items with estimates, acceptance criteria, and priority.

In Sprint: Items pulled into the current sprint.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Add backlog items with descriptions and initial estimates
  2. Set priority and categorize items
  3. Update status as items go through grooming
  4. Record grooming sessions to track velocity
  5. Analyze metrics to improve grooming efficiency
  6. Calculate ROI and value-to-effort ratios
