How It Works
The old rule of "multiply by 7" is inaccurate. Dogs age faster in their first years and then slower. Smaller breeds typically live longer and age slower than larger breeds. This calculator uses breed-specific aging curves for more accurate results.
Why Size Matters
Giant breeds (Great Danes, Mastiffs) age fastest and have shorter lifespans (6-8 years). Small breeds (Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles) age slowest and live longer (12-15 years). Medium and large breeds fall in between.
Why Dog Age Varies by Size
Dogs of different sizes age at different rates. Smaller dogs tend to live longer but mature faster in their first years. Large and giant breeds age more quickly but have shorter maximum lifespans. Understanding your dog's age helps you provide appropriate care at each life stage.
