What Base64 is
Base64 is an encoding format that represents binary data with 64 printable ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /) plus = for padding. It is commonly used to embed text and data in JSON, URLs, and email. Base64 is an encoding format, not encryption: anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords, tokens, or secrets.
How encoding and decoding work
- Encode: your text is converted to its UTF-8 bytes, which are regrouped into 6-bit units and mapped to the Base64 alphabet. Choose Encode, type or paste text, and copy the result.
- Decode: Base64 characters are mapped back to bytes and interpreted as UTF-8 text. Choose Decode, paste standard Base64, and read the result. Invalid characters, wrong lengths, or malformed padding show a clear error instead of corrupted text.
UTF-8 support
This tool encodes and decodes full UTF-8, including accented characters, Hindi and Chinese scripts, and emoji. Text round-trips exactly: encoding then decoding returns your original input. Only standard Base64 is accepted; URL-safe Base64 containing - or _ is rejected with an explicit message.
Common Base64 mistakes
- Pasting URL-safe Base64 (with - or _) into a standard decoder.
- Missing or extra = padding characters at the end.
- Line breaks or spaces copied from formatted output.
- Treating Base64 as encryption or assuming it protects secrets.
- Decoding Base64 that represents binary files and expecting readable text.
