What the JSON Formatter does

The JSON Formatter takes raw JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and makes it readable, checks that it is valid, or compresses it to its smallest form. Paste API responses, config files, or stored data, then choose Format, Minify, or Validate.

How to format, validate, and minify JSON

  • Format: pretty-prints your JSON with 2-space, 4-space, or tab indentation so nested objects and arrays are easy to scan.
  • Validate: confirms the input parses as JSON and reports its top-level type and size. Invalid input shows the exact parser error, with a line and column when the error position is known.
  • Minify: removes all insignificant whitespace to produce the most compact equivalent — useful before pasting JSON into URLs, payloads, or size-sensitive configs.

Common JSON syntax mistakes

  • Trailing commas after the last item in an object or array.
  • Single quotes around strings or keys instead of double quotes.
  • Unquoted object keys.
  • Missing commas between items, or missing closing brackets.
  • Comments, which are not part of the JSON specification.

Processed locally in your browser

Everything on this page runs locally with your browser's built-in JSON parser. Your input is never uploaded, stored, or shared — you can safely format configuration snippets and API samples.
